How do I find a scientific question and how do I come up with a specific title for my thesis?

The title and research question of a scientific paper are two important central points that must be defined before starting a scientific paper. The research question of a thesis is the "question" that you have to ask during the course of the thesis and answer concretely at the end of the thesis. The scientific question is always derived from theory and/or empirical findings. In some cases, it can be derived from a practical need, but it must always be supported by theory and/or empirical findings. Further information can be found here:

Peters, J. H. & Dörfler, T. (2019): Planning, conducting and analysing final theses in psychology and the social sciences. (2nd, updated and expanded edition). Pearson, chapter 6.

Peters, J. H. & Dörfler, T. (2019): Writing and designing theses in psychology and the social sciences. (2nd, updated and expanded edition). Pearson, chapter 1.

The title and topic of an academic thesis must be distinguished from the research question. The topic is the title of your thesis and should provide an outlook on the thesis and give an idea of the research question. Further information on formulating the title can also be found in Peters & Dörfler (2019).

How do I register my BA/MA thesis?

You should normally contact your supervisor before registering your thesis. Here you clarify the most important general conditions. These include the following:

  • Does your supervisor currently have any free capacity?
  • What should the content (topic) of the thesis be?
  • Can your supervisor supervise the content of your thesis?
  • When does your thesis have to be submitted?
  • What is the timetable for your thesis?
  • Does your supervisor have sufficient capacity to assess your thesis within the time available?
  • Who could provide the second opinion?

You can register with the ZPA using these PA forms:

Application for admission to write a Bachelor's thesis
Application for admission to write a Master's thesis

After submitting the application, the ZPA will ask the first supervisor for the topic of your thesis. A few days later, the ZPA will officially inform you of the topic and submission date of your thesis.

Please also note the information provided by the ZPA:
