What do I need to consider for the transition to the Master's programme?

Bachelor of Education (BEd) students who wish to transfer seamlessly to the Master of Education (MEd) programme should plan their thesis with foresight. All formal criteria for your BA thesis are set out in the examination regulations for your degree programme (PO BEd Special Education). You must take the following time periods into account when planning:

  • It can take up to 2 weeks from registering for the examination at the examination office to submitting the written topic by post.
  • You have 4 months to complete the thesis.
  • Your examiner has 2 months to correct your thesis.
  • The administration requires up to 4 weeks to book your work and issue your certificate.
  • The registration for the MEd is usually subject to a deadline. Please enquire about the deadline for enrolment in the MEd for your degree programme. For the MA in Special Needs Education, this deadline is usually at the beginning of September (for the transition to the winter semester) and the beginning of March (for the transition to the summer semester).

Important: According to the NRW Higher Education Act (§49), students can be given the opportunity to apply for admission to the MEd if they are still missing a maximum of 15 credit points. This means that in this case you would have to have 165 of 180 credit points when applying. For students of the BEd in Special Education, please note that the Bachelor's thesis counts for 10 CP and the MAP6 for 7 CP towards the total of 180 CP. This means that you need at least one of the two achievements to register for the MEd. The BA thesis must also be registered at the time of registration for the MEd in any case (i.e. you must have received the topic in writing from the Examination Office). You must then independently submit the missing credits to the Examinations Office at the end of the first MEd semester (for the MEd in Special Education, this is usually 30 March of the year following admission to the Master's programme). Otherwise you will be automatically de-registered from the MEd. The MEd Special Needs Education does not have an NC. This means that all students who have studied and successfully completed their BEd in Special Education at the University of Wuppertal can be admitted to the MEd in Special Education. At the beginning of each semester, you will receive some basic information from the ISL regarding the content and organisation of the Bachelor's thesis. Please enquire there for further details.
